Dawn’s work tells the story of life’s journey. How we carry our struggles, fears and
disappointments alongside our hopes and dreams, the acknowledgement of
suffering and the search for healing and acceptance.
The vessels are thrown and altered, marked with various indentations, with additions
to the surface. They are decorated using slips and underglazes with a randomly
applied glaze. The abstract marks symbolise the significant events we encounter
acknowledging their lasting impact.
Dawn adds gilt as a reference to the Japanese art of ‘Kintsugi” the restoring of a broken
vessel with gold, bringing renewed purpose, value and worth.
The multi-layered surfaces are very tactile, inviting you to run your hands over the
pieces and experience a contrast of rough and smooth, alongside unexpected
surprises.
‘Kintsugi is not the art of erasure – the invisible mend, the erasing of a mistake
– but rather the marking of a loss.’ - Edmund de Waal
